Kindergarten, about 1968. I was not one of those kids who outlined everything in black and stayed within the lines.

Also from kindergarten. My teacher added the question mark. Clearly it's the front door to the house, the doorknob is in the center of the rectangle, and the porchlight is the dot next to the door. I now have a Master of Architecture degree to prove it.

From 2nd grade, about 1971. This was my first lesson in serendipity. While glazing our pinch pots, I was trying to be very tidy with my red glaze. All the kids around me were reaching across the table from one glaze to another, dripping their brushes everywhere. It upset me that they were getting splotches on my pot, which I intended to be a perfect red. When the pots came back from the kiln, mine had these unusual silvers and greens, and everyone went "Ooooooh" and it was considered the best pot of all.

From high school, about 1978. This was my first exposure to using ink, as an ink wash. Little did I know what relationship with ink I'd have in the future.
